intussusceptive growth

aux·et·ic growth

growth by increase in the size of component cells. Synonym(s): intussusceptive growth

intussusceptive growth

Growth within itself, as in a cell. Intussusceptive growth was previously defined as an increase in:
(1) Size of a cell, tissue or organ (i.e., hypertrophy);
(2) Numbers of cells (e.g., hyperplasia).
It has since been repurposed in the context of angiogenesis as microvascular growth of blood vessels.
