Isachenko, Anatolii Grigor’evich
Born May 28, 1922, in Gomel’. Soviet physical geographer and cartographer. Doctor of geographical sciences (1963).
A professor of the department of geography of Leningrad State University since 1964, Isachenko has studied the general laws of physical geographic differentiation and worked out principles and methods of landscape classification, physical geographical regionalization, and compilation of landscape maps. He has also theoretically generalized the history of the development of geographical concepts. His principal works are Basic Problems of Physical Geography (1953); Physical Geographical Cartography (parts 1–3, 1958–61), for which he was awarded the. P. P. Semenov-Tian-Shanskii gold medal (1963); The Compilation and Editing of Special Maps (1961, coauthor); Principles of Landscape Study and Physical Geographical Regionalization (1965); Physical Geographical Regionalization of the Northwestern USSR (1965, coauthor); and The Development of Geograph-ical Concepts (1971).
