In west-central WV, east of Huntington; organized Nov 14, 1788 from Greenbrier County (WV) and Montgomery County (in VA). Name Origin: For the Kanawha River, which traverses it; named for an Indian tribe, possibly the Conoy of Algonquian linguistic stock. The name has been said to mean 'hurricane.'
