Kachari

a people living in the northern part of Assam State in India. Their population is more than 200, 000 (1967, estimate). Their language belongs to the Bodo subgroup of the Tibeto-Burman languages. Their religion is Hinduism; vestiges of ancient animist beliefs are still preserved. The Kachari are divided into the mountain Kachari (Dimasa) and the lowland Kachari (Burraor Burra-Mech). The lowland Kachari have settled among the Assamese and Bengali and are gradually being assimilated by them. Their chief occupation is slash-and-burn agriculture; some Kachari work on tea plantations.
