a depression without drainage, located in Iran in the southern part of the Iranian upland. Length, about 300 km; maximum width, 140 km; elevation, about 360 m. It is a marsh-ridden flatland with large tracts of moving sands. In the spring when the rivers overflow, it is flooded and a shallow (20-30 cm), slightly saline lake forms; this lake has changeable contours and dimensions, with reed growths along the shores.
