(an'jē-ō-sar-kō'mă), A rare malignant neoplasm occurring most often in soft tissue; believed to originate from the endothelial cells of blood vessels; microscopically composed of spindle-shaped cells, some of which line small spaces resembling vascular clefts.

An uncommon, aggressive mesenchymal malignancy, arising in the skin, liver, breast, soft tissues and viscera, primarily affecting the elderly; male:female, 2:1.Aetiology Most are idiopathic; some are linked to chronic lymphoedema (as occurs following axillary dissection for breast CA), others to radiation therapy; hepatic angiosarcoma is classically linked exposure to thorium dioxide (a long obsolete contrast medium), and is also associated with arsenic and vinyl chloride. 
Prognosis Poor, 10–20% 5-year survival.

angiosarcoma

A rare malignant tumour of the lining cells of small blood vessels that often occurs in several places at once and may affect the liver as a complication of CIRRHOSIS. It is known to occur in people who were exposed to the medical contrast medium thorotrast up to 25 years before and has been found in workers with vinyl chloride. The tumour is highly malignant and treatment is rarely effective.
