Furtwängler, Johann Adolf Michael
Born June 30, 1853, in Freiburg im Breisgau; died Oct. 11, 1907, in Athens. German archaeologist and art historian.
In 1894, Furtwàngler became a professor at the University of Munich. He led excavations at Olympia from 1878 to 1879 and at Aegina, Amyclae, and Orchomenus from 1901 to 1907. He published and attributed to specific masters a large number of works of ancient Greek art (mainly sculptures), using careful stylistic analysis and the opinions of classical authors.
