Kazan Physics and Mathematics Society

Kazan Physics and Mathematics Society

a Russian scientific society that arose in 1880 as the section of physical and mathematical sciences of the Society of Natural Scientists at the University of Kazan. The section was founded on the initiative of the astronomer M. A. Koval’skii, who became its first chairman. The section was reorganized in 1890 into the Physics and Mathematics Society. Papers on mathematics, physics, and other subjects are presented at its meetings. The society performs an important task in publicizing the ideas of N. I. Lobachevskii. A commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the date of his birth was organized in 1893. Funds collected by the society (by subscription) were used to erect a monument to Lobachevskii in 1896 and to institute the international Lobachevskii Prize in 1897 (eight competitions were held up to 1937).
