Kazarnovskii Isaak Abramovich

 

Born Sept. 17 (29), 1890, in Nikolaev, Soviet chemist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939). Graduated from the University of Zurich in 1914. He has been a researcher at the L. Ia. Karpov Physicochemical Institute since 1922.

Kazarnovskii’s main research was on the theory of formation and structure of metal hydrides, chlorides, and oxides. He discovered a number of new oxides, among them Na02 (1936) and K0 3 and Na0 3 (1949–51), elucidated their mechanism of formation, and proposed a new systematics for peroxides. He identified a new mechanism of formation of hydrogen peroxide from free hydroxyl radicals, as well as the mechanism of dissociation and oxidizing action of ozone proceeding by means of the ozo-nide ion 0 3− and free hydroxyl (1969).

Kazarnovskii developed industrially useful methods for the production of anhydrous aluminum chloride from clays (1935) and for the production of Na02 (1942), as well as a new method for the regeneration of air. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1941 and has received two orders, as well as medals.
