Kemal Tahir

Born in 1910 in Istanbul. Turkish writer and journalist.

Kemal Tahir spent many years in prison for his political views. His poems, such as “The Latest Report” (1941), deal with topical themes and are politically perceptive. The novels Remote Valley (1955), Bluish Smoke (1957), Pasture of the Seven Plane Trees (1958), and The Village. Hunchback (1959) portray life in Anatolia between the two world wars. In a series of novels that includes Men of a Captured City (1956; Russian translation, 1961) and Prisoner of a Captured City (1961), Kemal Tahir gives a panorama of social and political life in Turkey from 1908 to 1940.
