David, Jakob Julius
Born Feb. 6. 1859, in Weisskir-chen; died Nov. 20, 1906, in Vienna. Austrian author.
David studied at the University of Vienna. In the novels The Lord’s Right (1890), Blood (1891), and Dying on the Road (1900), David depicts the life of peasants, proletarian workers, students, artists, and the Jewish poor. His novel Going Over (1903) and his dramas A Rainy Day (1896) and Sympathy (1898) criticize bourgeois society. His historical novel from the Reformation period The Reborn (1891). his drama Hagar’s Son (1891), and his collection of historical stories Early Glow (1896) depict the Hussites and the struggle of the Czechs for national independence.
