Jalo
a group of oases in the Libyan Desert. Population, 4,000-5,000, mostly Berbers. Jalo is connected by a dirt road to Benghazi and by caravan paths to Egypt and Sudan. The most important settlement is Aujila (population, 2,700). Date palms, fig trees, olive trees, cereal grains, and vegetables (which are exported to Western Europe during the winter) are grown. Its industries are goat breeding and oil extraction.
