Hasenclever, Johann Peter

 

Born May 18, 1810, in Remscheid, North Rhine-Westphalia; died Dec. 16, 1853 in Düsseldorf. German painter.

Hasenclever studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts beginning in 1827. He worked in Munich and in Italy from 1838 to 1842 and in Düsseldorf from 1842. He fought in the Revolution of 1848–49 in Germany. A leading painter of the Biedermeier style, Hasenclever specialized in genre scenes, for example, Reading Room (1843; National Gallery, Berlin), as well as portraits. He also did a number of drawings and watercolors.
