Karen Demirchian

Demirchian, Karen Seropovich

 

Born Apr. 17, 1932, in Yerevan. Soviet party figure. Member of the CPSU since 1955.

The son of an office worker, Demirchian graduated from the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute in 1954 and from the Higher Party School Under the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1961. In 1954 he became a senior design engineer and a group leader at a scientific research institute in Leningrad. Named a senior foreman in 1955, he subsequently became the head of a shop and secretary of the party committee. He was appointed chief engineer and director of the Yerevan Electrical Engineering Plant in 1961.

Between 1966 and 1972, Demirchian served as secretary and second secretary of the Yerevan city committee. From 1972 to 1974 he was a secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia; he was named first secretary of the Central Committee in 1974. Demirchian became a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1976. He was a deputy to the ninth and tenth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.

Demirchian has been awarded the Order of the October Revolution, two other orders, and various medals.
