Karl Asmund Rudolphi

Rudolphi, Karl Asmund

Born June 14, 1771, in Stockholm; died Nov. 29, 1832, in Berlin. German naturalist. Corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1803). Professor at Greifswald (1797) and Berlin (1810) universities.

Rudolphi compiled the world’s first survey of helminths —Entozoorum synopsis (1819)—in which he described 981 species of parasites, which he grouped into 30 genera in five classes. This work was the foundation on which the study of helminths and their taxonomy and morphology subsequently developed.
