a city in Tiumen’ Oblast, RSFSR. Located on the leftbank of the Ishim River (a tributary of the Irtysh), where theIshim River is crossed by the Sverdlovsk-Omsk railroad. Popula-tion, 57, 000 (1972). Ishim arose in about 1670 as the village ofKorkino. In the first quarter of the 18th century the villagebecame the Korkino sloboda (tax-exempt settlement), and in1782 the sloboda became a city under the name Ishim. Theenterprises of the city serve mainly agriculture and transporta-tion, with a truck trailer plant, IshimsePmash (which makesfarm machinery), and a machine works. Other enterprises in thecity include clothing, rugs, furniture, and footwear factories;flour milling, meat, and cream-and-cheese combines; and a con-fectionery factory, a liqueur and vodka plant, and a brewery.Ishim has a pedagogical institute, an agricultural technicum, anda medical school.

a river in the Kazakh SSR and the RSFSR, a left tributary of the Irtysh River. Length, 2, 450 km; basin area, 177, 000 sq km, including 36, 000 sq km forming an interior drainage basin.

The Ishim rises in the Niiaz mountains on the northern edgeof the Kazakh hillocks. In its upper reaches it flows mainlythrough a narrow valley with rocky banks. Below the city ofTselinograd the valley widens. Bending around the KokchetavUpland, the Ishim makes a big loop and forms many smallrapids. It then enters the West Siberian Plain and flows throughthe low-lying Ishim Steppe in a broad floodland with manyoxbow lakes; in its lower reaches it flows through swamps. TheIshim is fed by snow. The period of spring high water is shortand pronounced, occurring in May and June (in the lowerreaches the overflowing Ishim becomes up to 15 km wide), alter-nating with a long period of low water in the summer, fall, andwinter. The average discharge near the village of Vikulovo, 215km from the mouth, is 56.3 cu m per sec; the maximum dis-charge is 686 cu m per sec. The Ishim freezes over in earlyNovember, and the ice breaks in April and May. The maintributaries are from the right: the Koluton, Zhabai, and Akkan-burluk. The Viacheslavka and Sergeevka reservoirs are locatedon the Ishim. The waters of the Ishim are widely used for water-ing and irrigation. The river is navigable upward from Petropav-lovsk over a stretch of 270 km and from Vikulovo to the mouth.The cities of Tselinograd, Derzhavinsk, EsiP, Petropavlovsk, and Ishim are located on the Ishim.
