Juan Carlos Castagnino

Born Nov. 18, 1908, in Mar del Plata; died Apr. 21, 1972, in Buenos Aires. Argentine painter and graphic artist.

Castagnino studied at the National College of Art in Buenos Aires (1929–34) and worked in Italy, France, and Spain (1938–40). He was a neorealist; in the 1930’s and 1940’s he worked with such artists as D. Siqueiros and A. Berni on monumental murals depicting contemporary life and the history of the Argentine people. He did murals for the Gallery of Peace (1945), the Paris Gallery (Man—Cosmos—Hope, 1959), the Obelisk Gallery (As the Street Comes to Life, 1961) and other public buildings in Buenos Aires. Castagnino’s works depict the people’s struggle for their rights.
