Location:5 miles north of Brownville Junction on ME 11, then 6 miles on gravel road.
Special Features:Site of a once-thriving iron works (built in 1843) that produced nearly2,000 tons of raw iron annually for half a century. A blast furnace(originally there were 16) and charcoal kiln are all that remain of theiron works. Two National Natural Landmarks are located nearby: GulfHagas, a 3-mile-long gorge that is part of the Appalachain Trail, andThe Hermitage, a 35-acre preserve with some of Maine's oldest whitepines. Site is open Memorial Day-Labor Day.
