Iudin, Pavel Fedorovich

Born Aug. 26 (Sept. 7), 1899, in the village of Apraksino, now in Gorky Oblast; died Apr. 10, 1968, in Moscow. Soviet philosopher and public figure. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953; corresponding member from 1939). Member of the CPSU from 1918.

Iudin graduated from the Institute of the Red Professors in 1931 and served as director of the institute from 1932 to 1938. From 1938 to 1944 he was director of the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and from 1937 to 1947 he was director of the Association of State Publishing Houses. He was also a member of the staff of the Central Committee of the CPSU. From 1946 to 1953, Iudin was editor in chief of the journal Sovetskaia kniga. In 1953 he was appointed deputy high commissioner of the USSR in Germany, and from 1953 to 1959 he was the USSR’s ambassador to the People’s Republic of China. Iudin’s chief works are on dialectical and historical materialism, scientific atheism, the theory of scientific communism, and the history of Marxist philosophy. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1943.

Iudin was elected a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU at the 19th and 20th Party Congresses, and he was a deputy to the third and fourth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He was awarded two orders of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
