Akhunbabaev, Iuldash

 

Born July 1 (13), 1885, in the village of Dzhoi-Bazar, Margilan Raion, Fergana Oblast; died Feb. 28, 1943. Soviet state figure. Member of the CPSU after 1921.

Akhunbabaev was born into the family of a poor peasant and attended a mekteb (elementary school); he worked as a farmhand when he was a boy. He was chairman of the Margilan Union of the Village Poor in 1920–21 and chairman of the Margilan Union of the Village Poor and Farmhands in 1921–25. He was an active participant in the struggle against Basmachestvo (a counterrevolutionary movement in Middle Asia). From 1925 to 1938 he was chairman of the Central Executive Committee of Soviets of the Uzbek SSR and from 1938 to 1943 chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Uzbek SSR and vice-chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and two other orders.
