Iuridicheskaia Literatura

(Legal Literature), a publishing house of the State Committee on Publishing, Printing, and the Book Trade of the USSR.

Founded on Dec. 12, 1917, as a publishing house in the People’s Commissariat of Justice of the RSFSR, it became Gosiurizdat in 1922 and received its present name in 1963. Its publications include scholarly works on problems of state and government, collections of legislative acts of the Soviet state, literature pertaining to elections to the supreme soviets of the USSR and RSFSR and to local soviets of people’s deputies, and textbooks for higher and secondary specialized educational institutions.

An important part of the work of the publishing house lies in informing a wide circle of readers about Soviet legislation—including administrative, civil, labor, and criminal legislation—and its application and in promoting a heightened awareness of legal questions among citizens. In 1979, Iuridicheskaia Literatura published 138 titles of books and pamphlets, in runs totaling about 67 million printer’s sheets and more than 9 million copies.

The publishing house was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor in 1977.
