Kanibadam
a city in Leninabad Oblast, Tadzhik SSR, in the western part of the Fergana Valley, on the Bol’shoi Fergana Canal, 6 km from the Kanibadam station on the Tashkent-Khavast-Kokand railroad line, 79 km east of Leninabad. Highway junction. Population, 27, 600 (1971).
Industry includes a canning and preserves combine (fruit, vegetables, and dried fruit), cotton-ginning and oil-extractionplants, the Avtozapchast’ Plant (producing parts and complexcomponents for motor vehicles and equipment for the cotton-ginning industry), and the Tadzhiksel’mash Plant (agriculturalmachinery). There are also spinning and garment and textilefactories. Kanibadam has an engineering technicum and a teachers college, as well as the Lakhuti Music and Drama Theater. The city is mentioned in historical records from 1463, and according to some sources it existed as early as the ninth or tenthcentury.
