Iskra, Ivan

Iskra, Ivan Ivanovich

Cossack colonel (Poltava regiment).

In August 1707, Iskra delivered V. L. Kochubei’s dispatch concerning the treason of hetman I. S. Mazepa and his secret relations with the Polish and Swedish kings to the Russian authorities. Mazepa, however, succeeded in making this dispatch appear to be slander. After discovering the danger which threatened him, Iskra fled from the Ukraine with Kochubei but was arrested by the Russian government, turned over to Mazepa, and executed on his orders neat the village of Borshchagovka (in present-day Pogrebishchenskii Raion, Vinnitsa Oblast) on July 15 (26), 1708.
