Islamei

(also islamii), a folk dance of the Kabardin and Adygei peoples; a type of lezginka. The melody for the islamei is performed on violin and accordion to the rhythms of a pkha-tsyk (a rattle made from four or five wooden plates). The composer M.A. Balakirev interpreted the dance in Islamei (1869), an Oriental fantasia for piano.
