Guliaev, Iurii Aleksandrovich

Born Sept. 9, 1930, in Tiumen’. Soviet Ukrainian singer (lyric baritone). People’s Artist of the USSR (1968). Member of the CPSU since 1964.

Guliaev graduated from the Urals Conservatory (Sverdlovsk) in the class of F. I. Obraztsovskaia in 1954. During the years 1955–60 he sang in the opera theaters of Sverdlovsk and Donetsk. In 1960 he became a soloist with the Ukrainian Theater of Opera and Ballet (Kiev). Guliaev’s best roles include Shchors (Shchors by Liatoshinskii), Listnitskii (The Quiet Don by Dzerzhinskii), Onegin (Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky), Figaro (The Barber of Seville by Rossini), Count di Luna (Il Trovatore by Verdi), Renato (Un Bailo in Maschera by Verdi), Escantillo (Carmen by Bizet), Robert (Iolanta by Tchaikovsky), and Papageno (The Magic Flute by Mozart). He has appeared as a concert singer in many cities of the Soviet Union and abroad. Guliaev’s repertory includes many works by Soviet composers.
