Iurii Bazhanov

Bazhanov, Iurii Pavlovich

 

Born Apr. 10 (23), 1905, in the city of Kazatin, Kiev Province. Artillery marshal (1965). Member of the CPSU since 1929.

Bazhanov was born into the family of a railroad worker. He voluntarily joined the Red Army in 1920. He graduated from Kiev Artillery School (1926) and the Artillery Academy (1936). From 1938 to 1942 Bazhanov was head of the 1st Moscow Artillery School. From 1942 to 1944 he served as chief of the operations group of guards mortar units of the Northwestern and 1st Baltic Fronts. From August 1944 to March 1945 he was deputy commander of artillery for guards mortar units of the 1st Baltic Front; from March to August 1945 he was commander of artillery of the Primor’e Military District. He graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff in 1953 and then commanded artillery of the Far East Military District. Since 1955 he has been head of the Marshal of the Soviet Union Govorov Military-Engineering Radio Engineering Antiaircraft Defense Academy. He has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of Kutuzov First Class, the orders of Suvorov Second Class and Kutuzov Second Class, two Orders of the Red Star, and medals.
