Nesterikhin, Iurii Efremovich

 

Born Oct. 10, 1930, in the city of Ivanovo. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970). Member of the CPSU since 1960.

Nesterikhin graduated from Moscow State University in 1953. He worked at the Institute of Atomic Energy from 1954 to 1961 and at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1961 to 1967. In 1967 he became director of the Institute of Automation and Electrical Measurements of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal work has been in plasma physics and controlled thermonuclear fusion. He has proposed methods for measuring the parameters of a plasma by using lasers and optical interferometry of image converters and has also developed equipment for measuring the density, temperature, and other characteristics of a plasma. Nesterikhin is editor in chief of the journal Avtometriia, which is published by the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.
