Iakovlev, Iurii Vasil’evich

Born Apr. 25, 1928, in Moscow. Soviet Russian actor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1976).

After his graduation from the Shchukin Theatrical School in 1952, Iakovlev joined the troupe of the Vakhtangov Theater. His roles have included Pantalone in Gozzi’s Turandot, the Major in Fredro’s Ladies and Hussars, Glumov in A. N. Ostrovskii’s Even a Wise Man Stumbles, and Anton Pavlovich Chekhov in Maliugin’s My Mocking Happiness. Since 1956, Iakovlev has also acted in films; in addition to playing the role of Prince Myshkin in The Idiot (1958), he has appeared in Anna Karenina (1968), The Subject for a Little Story (1969), and the television film The Irony of Fate (197’5).

Iakovlev received the Stanislavsky State Prize of the RSFSR in 1970 and the State Prize of the USSR in 1979. He has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
