A major industrial center, it produces chemicals, textiles, leather goods, and food products. It is also a transportation hub with an airport. There are educational institutions in engineering and agriculture, an experimental farm, and a technology institute. Kanpur was a village until its cession to the British in 1801 by the Nawab of Oudh. During the Indian MutinyIndian Mutiny,1857–58, revolt that began with Indian soldiers in the Bengal army of the British East India Company but developed into a widespread uprising against British rule in India. Kanpura city in northern India in the state of Uttar Pradesh, situated on the right bank of the Ganges. Population, 1. 3 million (1971). Kanpur’s location in the central part of the Ganges valley hashelped to transform it into an important transportation hub andnorthern India’s largest center of industrial factories and plants. The city’s major industries are textiles (mainly cotton, but alsowool) and leather footwear. Machine building (railroad cars), the chemical industry (a chemical fertilizer plant was built in1968 that produces mainly urea), and metalworking are beingdeveloped in the city.
