Iuriuzan

(until 1943, the settlement of Iuriuzanskii Zavod), a city in Katav-Ivanovsk Raion, Cheliabinsk Oblast, RSFSR. Iuriuzan’, located on the Iuriuzan’ River, has a railroad station on the Viazovaia-Katav-Ivanovsk line. It has a machinery plant, a lumber combine, and enterprises of food-processing industry. An evening mechanical technicum and a museum of local lore are located in the city.

a river in the Bashkir ASSR and Cheliabinsk Oblast, RSFSR; a left tributary of the Ufa River (Kama River basin). The Iuriuzan’ measures 404 km in length and drains an area of 7,240 sq km. It rises in the southern Urals, north of the Iamantau Massif. In the upper course it flows through a deep valley. The valley widens in the middle course and narrows again toward the mouth, on the Ufa Plateau. The river empties into Pavlovka Reservoir.

The Iuriuzan’ is fed predominantly by snow. About 60 percent of the annual flow occurs during spring high water. Freshets occur as a result of summer rains. The mean flow rate is approximately 55 cu m per sec. The river freezes from the second half of October to early December; the ice breaks up in April, and ice blocking occurs. The river is used to supply industrial enterprises and to float timber. The lower 16 km is navigable. The cities of Iuriuzan’ and Ust’-Katav are located on the river.
