Iustin Ivlianovich Dzhanelidze

(also lustin Iulianovich Dzhanelidze). Born July 20 (Aug. 1), 1883, in the village of Samtredia, in present-day Samtredia Raion, Georgian SSR; died Jan. 14, 1950, in Leningrad. Soviet surgeon. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1944). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1936). Lieutenant general of the medical service. Hero of Socialist Labor (1945).

In 1905, Dzhanelidze was expelled from the University of Kharkov for his participation in student disturbances. He continued his medical education in Switzerland, and in 1911 he received a diploma from Moscow University. From 1921 he was a professor at Petrograd Medical Institute (today the First Leningrad Medical Institute), and from 1939 he was chief surgeon in the navy. His basic works are on cardiac and vascular surgery, traumatology, and emergency and military field surgery. In 1913, Dzhanelidze was the first surgeon in the world to successfully suture a wound of the ascending aorta. In 1947 he was elected chairman of the board of the All-Union Society of Surgeons. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1949. Dzhanelidze was awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, and medals.
