Iokanga

Iokanga

 

or Iokan’ga, a river in Murmansk Oblast, RSFSR, in the northern Kola Peninsula. Length, 203 km; basin area, 6,020 sq km.

The Iokanga originates in Lake Alozero on the northern slopes of the Keiv Highland and flows through several lakes before discharging into the Iokanga Estuary of the Sviatonos Gulf of the Barents Sea. In its upper reaches it flows through a broad valley and then a narrow gorge, forming rapids; below Lake Iokanga it forms waterfalls. It is fed by snow and rain, discharging water at an average annual rate of 74.5 cu m per sec. Its largest tributary is the Sukhaia River (on the right). The river is suitable for floating logs.
