Ivan Aleksandrov

Aleksandrov, Ivan Gavrilovich

Born Aug. 20 (Sept. 1), 1875, in Moscow; died there on May 2, 1936. Soviet engineer and scientist in energetics and hydraulics. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1932.

Aleksandrov graduated from the Moscow School of Transportation Engineering in 1901. He took part in drawing up the plan of GOELRO (State Commission for the Electrification of Russia) and other state planning projects relating to economic regionalization and the industrial utilization of electric power, water transportation, irrigation, and so forth. In 1921 he became a member of the presidium of the State Planning Commission. He drew up the plan for the construction of the Dnieper Hydroelectric Power Plant and other hydraulics installations. Aleksandrov helped work out the general plan for the electrification of Middle Asia as well as the plan for the construction of the Baikal-Amur waterway. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
