Maurer, Ion Gheorghe
Born Sept. 23, 1902, in Bucharest. Political and state figure of the Socialist Republic of Rumania (SRR); member of the Academy of the SRR (1955); Hero of Socialist Labor of the SRR (1962); Hero of the SRR (1972). Son of a teacher.
Maurer graduated from the department of law of the University of Bucharest. He joined the Communist Party of Rumania (CPR) in 1936, and from 1941 to 1943 he was interned in a concentration camp. After the liberation of Rumania from the fascist invaders (August 1944), Maurer served as deputy minister of transportation and public works (1945-46), secretary-general of the Supreme Economic Council, and deputy minister of the national economy (1946-47). In 1948 he was elected to the Central Committee of the CPR. He was minister of foreign affairs in 1957-58. Maurer served as chairman of the Presidium of the Grand National Assembly from 1958 to 1961. He was a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Rumanian Workers’ Party from 1960 to 1965. From 1965 to 1974 he was a member of the Executive Committee and of the Permanent Presidium of the Central Committee of the CPR. In 1974-75 he was a member of the Political Executive Committee of the Central Committee of the CPR, and from March 1961 to 1974, chairman of the Council of Ministers. [15-1538-1; updated]
