Special Features:John Gorrie was a young physician who served as Apalachicola'spostmaster, city treasurer, town councilman, and bank director in theearly 1800s. Concern for his yellow fever patients led Gorrie todevelop a method for cooling their rooms. By inventing a machine thatmadeice, he became a pioneer in the field of air conditioning andrefrigeration and in 1851 received the first US patent for mechanicalrefrigeration. A replica of his ice-making machine is on display at themuseum.
