John Horse

1812?-1882. Seminole leader of African-American background who led rebellious slaves and Native Americans in resistance against the United States. Defeated (1838) and forced to move west of the Mississippi, he and a group of his followers eventually emigrated to Mexico (1850), where they established a community and served as frontier scouts.
