keratectasia

Bulging of the CORNEA due to weakening from thinning or softening (KERATOMALACIA). In keratectasia there is a danger of rupture under the influence of the normal intraocular pressure and urgent measures are needed to avoid this. Sometimes a ‘bandage’ contact lens is used; more often a corneal graft is performed.
