Kaine, Tim

(Timothy Michael Kaine), 1958–, U.S. politician, b. St. Paul, Minn., B.A. Univ. of Missouri, 1979, J.D. Harvard, 1983. After a clerkship, he was a lawyer in private practice, and taught legal ethics as an adjunct professor (1988–94) at the Univ. of Richmond law school. A moderate Democrat, he then served on the city council (1995–98) and was mayor (1998–2001) of Richmond, Va., and was elected lieutenant governor (2002–6) of Virginia before becoming the state's governor (2006–10). From 2009 to 2011 he also was chairman of the Democratic National Committee. In 2012 he was elected to the U.S. Senate from Virginia; he was reelected in 2018.
