Kaitarma
Kaitarma
a custom among the peoples of Central Asia which represented a vestige of the clan system. According to thecustom, a newly married woman was detained by her parents orother relatives until the payment by the husband of the kalym (bride-price). In the USSR, the criminal codes of most of theUnion republics have established criminal responsibility for thiscustom, since they regard the kaitarma as preventing a womanfrom entering into a marriage.
