Kerki
a city and center of Kerki Raion, Chardzhou Oblast, Turkmen SSR. Located on the left bank of the Amu Darya River; on the right bank is the landing and railroad station of Kerkichi (on the Kagan-Dushanbe line). Population, 14,300 (1972). Kerki has cotton-ginning, building materials, and mechanical repair plants and a dairy-creamery. There is a meatpacking plant, a mechanized bakery, and a carpet factory. The city also has a fishery enterprise and a teacher-training school. Kerki has been known since the tenth century; it became a city in 1925. The V. I. Lenin Karakum Canal begins near Kerki.
