Kattakurgan
Kattakurgan
a city in Samarkand Oblast, Uzbek SSR. It is situated in the Zeravshan Valley and has a railroad station on the Tashkent-Kagan line, 76 km northwest of Samarkand, with which it is linked by a highway. Population, 44, 000 (1970). Chief industries include an oil and fat combine, the Khlopkomash plant, a cotton-ginning plant, a brickyard, a dairy, meat-packing and flour-milling combines, and a steam power plant. The city has the Uzbek Drama Theater, an evening industrial technicum, and medical and pedagogical schools. The site of present-day Kattakurgan has been settled since the late 17th century. Nearby is the Kattakurgan Reservoir, also known as the Uzbek Sea.
