Iordan, Iorgu

Born Sept. 29 (Oct. 11), 1888, in Tecuci. Rumanian linguist and academician of the Academy of the Socialist Republic of Rumania (1945). Specialist in comparative Romance philology, Rumanian language and toponomy, and French and Italian literary history.

After graduating from the University of Ia§i, Iordan completed his studies in Western Europe. He was a professor at the University of Iasj (1911–46) and of Bucharest (1946–58) and served as director of the Institute of Linguistics (1949–52 and from 1958). Between 1945 and 1947 he was Rumanian ambassador to the USSR, and in 1955 he was appointed chairman of the Commission for the Study of the Development of the Rumanian Language and People under the auspices of the Academy of the Socialist Republic of Rumania. He founded the bulletin Alexandru Philippide (1934–48), published by the Institute of Rumanian Philology, and has served as editor in chief of the journals Limba rominä (from 1952) and Revue de linguistique (1956–63), renamed Revue roumaine de linguistique in 1964.
