Gebauer, Jan

 

Born Oct. 8, 1838, in the village of Ubislavicích in Bohemia; died May 25, 1907. Czech linguist, Slavicist. Member of the Prague Academy of Sciences (1890); professor at the University of Prague (from 1880).

Gebauer was an adherent of the neogrammarian school. His chief interest was the history of the Czech language. He participated in the publication of Old Czech literary monuments. He proved that the manuscripts of Králové Dvůr and Zelená-Hora were literary hoaxes. He wrote a historical grammar of the Czech language and a dictionary (unfinished) of the Old Czech language (letters A-N). He managed the journal Listy filologické.
