Ivan Kraval

Born Mar. 17, 1897; died 1938. Soviet government leader, specialist in the area of labor economics and statistics, doctor of economics. Became a member oftheCPSUin 1919.

Kraval’ was born in the village of Potorovskie in the former Liutsin District, Vitebsk Province. He graduated from the la. M. Sverdlov Communist Institute (1921) and the Institute of the Red Professoriat (1924). In 1918–19 he was in pedagogical work. From 1924 to 1930 he was plenipotentiary of the Presidium of the Supreme Council on the National Economy, a member of the collegium of a planning and economic administration, manager of a labor economics department (1925–30), and a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Council on ther National Economy (1928–30). He was deputy people’s commissar of labor of the USSR from 1930 to 1932, first deputy director of the Central Administration of National Economic Accounting and a member of the Presidium of the State Planning Commission of the USSR from 1933 to 1935, and director of the Central Administration of National Economic Accounting and vice-chairman of the State Planning Committee of the USSR from 1935 to 1937. He was a delegate to the Fifteenth, Sixteenth, and Seventeenth Congresses of the party. He participated in drawing up the first five-year plans for the development of the USSR national economy. He was editor in chief of a number of economic publications, a member of the editorial boards of Torgovo-promyshlennaia gazeta and the magazine Puti industrializatsii (Paths of Industrialization), and a member of the Soviet delegation to the First International Congress on Economic Planning (Amsterdam, 1931). He was awarded the Order of Lenin.
