[¦ī‚ō ′tȯr·əs] (astronomy) A doughnut-shaped region of dense plasma that orbits Jupiter at the radial distance of the satellite Io and results from ionization by solar ultraviolet radiation of gases emitted from Io in volcanic eruptions.
