Ivanovskii, Evgenii

Born Mar. 7, 1918, in the village of Chereia, in what is now Chashniki Raion, Vitebsk Oblast. Soviet military leader. General of the army (1972). Member of the CPSU since 1941.

Ivanovskii joined the Soviet Army in 1936. He graduated from the Saratov Armor School in 1938, the Military Academy of Mechanization and Motorization in 1941, and the Military Academy of the General Staff in 1958. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45, Ivanovskii served as commander of a tank battalion, chief of a staff section of a tank corps, and, from 1944, commander of a separate Guards heavy tank and self-propelled gun regiment. He fought at Moscow, Stalingrad, and Kursk, in the liberation of the Ukraine and Poland, and in the East Prussian Operation.

Ivanovskii served as first deputy chief of staff of a military district from 1958 to 1961 and thereafter held various command positions until 1968. He was commander of troops of the Moscow Military District from 1968 to 1972. In July 1972 he was named commander of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany.

Ivanovskii became a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1971 and was a deputy to the eighth and ninth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, four Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Suvorov Third Class, Orders of the Patriotic War First and Second Class, two Orders of the Red Star, the Order For Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR Third Class, and various medals. He has also been the recipient of various foreign orders and medals.
