Ivanov, Valentin Konstantinovich

Born Sept. 18 (Oct 1), 1908, in St. Petersburg. Soviet mathematician. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970).

Ivanov graduated from Leningrad University in 1938. In 1956 he became a professor at Ural (Sverdlovsk) University. His first works dealt with the theory of matrices. Subsequently he worked in various branches of mathematics: generalized functions, the theory of approximations, the inverse problem of potential theory with applications to geophysics, harmonic functions, and entire functions of many complex variables. Ivanov devoted a series of works to incorrect problems (the concept of quasisolu-tion, methods of solution). He was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1966.
