Jan Porcellis

Porcellis, Jan

Born circa 1584, in Ghent; died Jan. 29, 1632, in Zuterwaude, in South Holland. Dutch marine painter.

Porcellis worked in Antwerp, Haarlem, Amsterdam, and Zuterwaude. Overcoming the fragmentary composition and variegated colors of early Dutch marine landscape painting, Porcellis sought to achieve a convincing rendering of the ambience of air and light. His marine paintings are marked by a narrow range of colors, made up for the most part of shades of gray (Shipwreck, 1631, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich).
