Jan Szczepanski

Szczepański, Jan

 

Born Sept. 14,1913, in Ustroń. Polish sociologist. Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1964).

Szczepański became a professor at the University of Łodź in 1951. He was director of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology from 1968 to 1975, and he became vice-president of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1972. He was president of the International Sociological Association from 1966 to 1970.

Szczepański’s principal works deal with the history and theory of sociology, the social structure of Polish society, and the sociology of higher education. Beginning in 1958 he directed the publication of A Study of the Position of the Working Class and the Intelligentsia (vols. 1–28, 1959–67). Szczepański received the State Prize of the Polish People’s Republic First Class in 1974.
