Olyk, Ipai

 

(pen name of Ipatii Stepanovich Stepanov). Born Mar. 24, 1912, in the village of Toimetsola, present-day Morki Raion, Mari ASSR; died 1943. Soviet Mari poet.

In 1931, with Iyvan Kyrlia, Olyk published the poetry collection We Are Shock Workers. They later published several other poetry collections. Olyk developed a precise syllabic-accentual versification in Mari poetry. Olyk wrote the play Golden Dawn, which deals with the Revolution. He also wrote short stories and translated works by A. S. Pushkin, N. A. Nekrasov, and V. V. Mayakovsky.
